Abstract
Microwave transitions from the to the orbital levels have been observed in sodium with principal quantum number from 11 to 17 by detecting optical radiation from the levels, yielding precise values for the difference in the and quantum defects as well as the and fine-structure splittings. We found the doublets to be normal, reversed from the doublets, which are known to be inverted.
