Abstract
The Geological Survey contains extensive collections of fossils and Recent organisms, including many type and figured specimens, the basis of published descriptions and names. Since a holotype or lectotype, if lost, cannot easily be replaced by a substitute specimen of equal status and value to research workers, the protection of types is a responsibility recognised by museums throughout the world. To ensure that type specimens will be available to future generations of students, as well as to the present generation, most museums have rigid rules controlling their availability.
