Tilt adaptation and figural after-effect.

Abstract
Three expts. are reported on the change in apparent tilt of visually perceived lines after long inspection. Vertical lines when presented upon a rectangular cardboard which was tilted 10[degree] with respect to the vertical in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction changed their apparent orientation so as to become more nearly parallel to the edges of the cardboard. Lines tilted with respect to the vertical but not with respect to the edges of the cardboard upon which they were presented showed no significant tendency to turn toward the vertical. It is suggested that the results of Prentice and Beardslee which appeared to show that tilted lines tend to become vertical with long inspection can be accounted for in terms of the interaction of these lines with the edges of the cardboard upon which they were presented.
