Nonuniform Torsion of Steel Beams in inelastic Range

Abstract
Tests on five 6 in.×6 in. rolled wide-flange steel beams of 76 in. length were performed by subjecting them to concentrated torques in the span. The tests were carried to very large angles of twist and in only one of them was failure achieved by tensile rupture. A theoretical analysis, based on the elastic plastic theory, showed good correlation with the experimental results in the prediction of the torque at which general softening of the system set in. The large post mechanism strength is shown to be attributable to strain-hardening and membrane effects.
