Abstract
Twenty-seven stands representing eight major vegetation types in Cape Breton Highlands National Park were examined to estimate terrestrial and epiphytic lichen biomass. The greatest terrestrial lichen dry weight measured was over 790 g/m2, located on the windswept treeless plateau at about 450 m in elevation. Balsam fir-black spruce vegetation types at lower elevations had more epiphytic than terrestrial lichens. Excluding one exceptional stand dry weights obtained were 14.0 g/m2 epiphytic lichens and 1.8 g/m2 terrestrial lichens. In hardwood stands below 300 m elevation the total lichen biomasses were about 1.0 g/m2.Keywords
