Discrete and continuous Franck Condon factors of the Mg2 A1Σ+uX1Σ+g system and their J dependence

Abstract
Selective and nonselective excitation of the Mg2 A1Σ+uX1Σ+g system has been obtained using the three uv lines of an argon ion laser. The discrete laser induced progressions have been compared with calculations of the discrete Franck Condon factors. Excellent agreement has been obtained taking into account the large J dependence due to the different shape of the potential curves involved. The continuous Franck Condon factors have been employed for an accurate determination of the repulsive part of the rotationless potential of the ground state, which has been evaluated up to 3400 cm−1 above the dissociation limit. Direct observation of predissociation of the A1Σ+u state has been possible by measuring the 3p 3P–3d 3D absorption of the Mg atomic system.
