Resightings of Independent Fin Whales, Balaenoptera physalus, on Maternal Summer Ranges

Abstract
Between 1981 and 1987 in Massachusetts Bay, 16 different fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) calves were individually identified. Separation of mother and calf occurred after the 1st year in at least nine instances. Four calves were observed to return to the area in subsequent years, suggesting that, in at least some instances, fidelity to a summer feeding ground is determined matrilineally.
