Behavior of Retinal Pigment Epithelium in Organ Culture Conditions

Abstract
In organ culture conditions the retinal pigment epithelium of the chick embryo presents two patterns of growth: (1) it covers the choroidal and scleral mesoderm, and (2) it invaginates into it forming glandular structures. In each case the retinal pigment epithelium cells may keep or loose their pigment. Occasionally they are transformed into a nonpigmented stratified epithelium. The retinal pigment epithelium cells keep their pigment only when the contact with Bruch’s membrane is maintained.
