Abstract
A pink me thane-utilizing bacterium was isolated in pure culture. In all respects it is identical with Methanomonas methanica (Sohngen). Specific enrichment culture conditions were worked out for its isolation from natural sources, and nutritional and physiological characteristics of the pure culture were defined. An absolute requirement exists for organic growth factor(s) present in a cold water extract of agar (Difco); this requirement is partially satisfied by high concentration of calcium pantothenate. Carbon balances were made in methane medium. Washed cells also oxidize methanol, formaldehyde and formate. Of a large number of substrates tested, including gaseous and liquid aliphatic paraffinic hydrocarbons, the organism would grow only on methane and methanol. Reasons are advanced for abandoning the genus Methanomonas, and for reclassifying the organism as Pseudomonas methanica. Keywords
