Abstract
The ureteral peristaltic rate response to radiopaque contrast media was investigated using electrophysiological techniques. The modification caused by these agents in the characteristics of ureteral peristaltic contractions and urine flow rate are quantitatively presented. Criteria for the evaluation of the comparative effects of diuretics and contrast media are established in terms of the critical relevant parameters of peristaltic rate, bolus volume, and urine flow rate. In light of the data obtained here, pitfalls in the interpretation of cineurography and other radiologic methods used in the visualization of the upper urinary tract are discussed with particular reference to the facilitation of vesicoureteral reflux. Keywords
