Visual Contribution to Speech Intelligibility in Noise

Abstract
Tests of oral speech intelligibility in noise were made with and without supplementary observation of the speaker''s facial and lip movements. The visual contribution to oral speech intelligibility (relative to its possible contribution) is approximately independent of the speech-to-noise ratio under test. Because of the greater opportunity for visual contribution at low speech-to-noise ratios the absolute contribution can be exploited most profitably under these conditions.
