Abstract
Fine channels built into the plasma membranes where cells are joined enable large masses of cells to exchange a variety of substances and thereby to interact and function as a unit rather than as discrete bodies. This finding has major implications for biology and medicine, in particular for our understanding of both normal (e.g., embryonic differentiation) and abnormal growth (e.g., cancer). Keywords
