Lateral Buckling of Rolled Steel Beams

Abstract
In this experimental investigation of the lateral buckling of rolled steel beams under transverse loading, thirty-three beams with conditions of simple support in depths from 10 in. to 18 in. and twenty-one 10-in. beams with two types of bolted, semirigid end connections were tested. Close correlation between the experimental and theoretical values of the nominal bending strength was found for the more slender simply supported beams which buckled in the elastic range. The factor of safety, in terms of nominal bending strength of the test beams with respect to present and proposed design formulas, was determined.
