β-Carotene as a Treatment for Photohypersensitivity Due to Erythropoietic Protoporphyria

Abstract
The preliminary results obtained with stabilized and non-stabilized β-carotene in the oral treatment of photohypersensitivity in 25 protoporphyria patients are reported. β-Carotene appeared to have a beneficial effect in a majority of these patients. Carotinodermia was the only side-effect. Difficulties with regard to the evaluation of the results are discussed.
