Abstract
The collective dynamical properties of water are discussed with reference to recent inelastic scattering data as well as to simulation results reported here for the first time. Some striking features (notably the so-called `fast sound') which aroused in the past a considerable debate now appear to be rather well understood. In contrast, there are other additional aspects (in particular, the character of a nearly flat mode at present both in water and in ice) which undoubtedly require a better understanding. Keywords
