TRICHINOSIS: A SPORADIC OUTBREAK WITH REPORT OF A CASE

Abstract
A case of trichinosis was diagnosed at an Army General Hospital by biopsy of the calf muscles done only because of the history and symptoms of muscular pain. Sections of the muscle revealed from 570 to 640 Trichinella cysts in 0.28 gm. of muscle. The patient, infested 7 yrs. prior to the diagnosis, was one of 38 who were infested with trichina in Montana. One of the individuals died and showed live Trichinella larvae in the spinal fluid. A general review of the incubation period, which varied from 3 days to little more than 2 wks., and the more prominent symptoms manifested, are listed. There is no known treatment during the encystment phase. During the acute phase or period of invasion, thorough catharsis supplemented with vermifuges are helpful.
