Abstract
The value of a theory of transformation of production systems in explaining rapid social and economic change is discussed. In Sassatro (the Dida village), the lineage system persisted from 1920-1945, passing through a period of transition to small-scale capitalist farming during 1946-1960. In the 2 decades following Ivory Coast''s independence (1961-1980), patterns of capitalist farm production were gradually reinforced at Sassatro; the importance of the lineage system was reduced.
