Trifluoroiodosilane and difluorodi-iodosilane: their properties and use in preparing fluorosilicon derivatives with Si–N, Si–O, and Si–S bonds

Abstract
Fluoroiodosilanes SiF4–xIx(x= 1 or 2) have been prepared by cleavage of the corresponding dimethylaminofluoro-silanes with HI; their physical properties are reported. They react respectively with HgO to give (SiF3)2O and oligomeric fluorosiloxanes, and with water to give (SiF3)2O (initially) and fluorosiloxane polymers. The nature of volatile oligomers formed in these and other reactions is discussed. Trifluorosilyl pseudohalides SiF3CN and SiF3NCS are prepared from SiF3I and corresponding HgII or AgI compounds. With HgS, SiF3I, and SiF2I2 form silathianes, believed to be (SiF3)2S and (SiF2S)2. Trifluoroiodosilane reacts with NMe3 to give a 1 :2 adduct, probably (SiF3,2NMe3)+I, with NHMe2 to give SiF3NMe2, and with ammonia to give polymeric fluorosilazanes.
