Abstract
The proteinase inhibitor, Bayer A 128, is effective in markedly reducing the mortality in experimental necrotizing pancreatitis. Its mechanism of action would appear to be that of inhibiting the enzymatic digestion of blood. In view of the known great toxicity of artificially produced hemochromogens upon intravenous injection and in view of the confirmation in the human of certain findings in the experimental animal, we believe that these studies lend further support to the implication of enzymically digested hemoglobin as a potentially lethal factor not only in necrotizing pancreatitis, but in strangulation obstruction and irreversible shock. Keywords
