RELATION OF TEMPERATURE OF CEREBRAL CORTEX TO SPREADING DEPRESSION OF LEO

Abstract
Surface temp. of cortex is shown to decisively favor the spreading cortical depression of Leao. If surface of exposed cortex (cat or monkey) is protected from exposure to room air by a pool of petrolatum at body temp., spreading cortical depression can rarely be evoked. If the oil temp. is decreased sufficiently to reduce the cortical surface temp. about 10[degree]C below body temp., the reaction can usually be evoked by electrical stimulus or mechanical deformation of the cortex. 4 components of the reaction have been identified on the basis of velocities of spread of the reaction. The velocities vary from the order of 0.025 mm./min. for the D1 component to 0.003 mm./min. for the D4 component. Spreading cortical depression consists of progressive depolarization of contiguous.neurones. The authors believe that this decisive and reversible temp function suggests a chemically coupled reaction.
