Investigation of Landau-Damping Effects on Shock Formation

Landau damping in plasmas of equal ion and electron temperatures (alkali plasmas) may prevent the formation of a shock. Shocks are produced when the ratio $\frac{T_e}{T_i}$ is increased to about 8 or so by cooling the ions through $i-n$ collisions.
