The Student Image of the Teacher

Abstract
Two classes of students in a graduate school of management were asked to rate faculty members from whom they felt they learned "a lot" or "very little" on 36 adjective dimensions. Clearly different images emerged of the "good" and "poor" teacher. These images were summarized in terms of three basic dimensions-competence, personal potency, and supportiveness. Factor analyses confirmed these dimensions. Teachers were then scored in terms of the dimensions, and profiles of good and poor teachers were compared. The generality of the dimensions for authority roles was discussed by comparing them with dimensions used in leadership, management, and socialization studies.
