Abstract
Specular scattering of an atomic He beam from a Si(111)7 × 7 surface is analyzed in terms of interference in the normal momentum transfer. An average distance is derived which corresponds to the double-layer spacing. It is concluded that both the top and second double layer are exposed as a result of the reconstruction and it is shown that a large fraction of the top double layer is missing. Keywords
