Abstract
Candy was analyzed for presence of the colon group of bacteria as indicator of possible fecal contamination; 1138 pieces showed the colon group 29 times (2.5%). Sticky candies and nut candies had the greater apparent contamination. In 525 analyses the colon culture isolated was checked for species; only 2 of 14 were found to belong to Escherichia coli or E. communior, the others being regarded as non-fecal. The danger from contamination seems to be slight, but certain obvious sanitary precautions are recommended. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
