Abstract
A single human aorta obtained from a 25-year-old white male who died an accidental death was analyzed for cholesterol in the 3 dimensions of the vessel. The aorta was stained grossly with Sudan IV to delineate fatty deposits and then divided into a number of samples along the length of the vessel. Each sample was divided into 3 portions parallel to the intimal surface and referred to as intima, inner media, and outer media. The results showed the extent and intensity of Sudan staining noted grossly to be directly proportional to the cholesterol content of the tissue. In the areas where no lipid was noted grossly in the tissue the cholesterol concentration in the inner media of the vessel was higher than the values for the outer media or the intima. There was no evidence of a gradient of cholesterol concentration along the length of the aorta. Keywords
