Acute Myocardial Infarction Treated by Glucose-Insulin-Potassium (GIK) Infusion

Abstract
Fifty patients born on an even date were thus treated, while 54 patients born on an uneven date were used as control subjects. During the 1st 3 days after admission to the hospital 500 cc of a 30% glucose solution with 40 meq KC1 and 23 LU. standard insulin were given daily during 4-6 hr. No significant decrease in mortality was found in the treatment group. Nor does the therapy show any distinct effect upon the rate of rhythm and/or conduction disturbances even if certain observations suggest that in some cases with arrhythmias this therapy is of value. No change in the rate of myocardial rupture was observed.
