Abstract
The egg production, basal metabolic rate, and molting of 24 White Leghorn hens were studied over a period of 1/2 yr. Thiouracil feeding depressed the BMR without, however, preventing the molt. Its admn. in the food initiated molting, especially in a dosage of 0.5-1%. The bearing of these results on the mechanism of molting is discussed, since it appears that molting may occur in spite of a depression of the thyroid gland.
