Abstract
A qualitative picture of the electronic structure of ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic metals and alloys is given. Ferromagnetism occurs when half the 3d states are completely filled. (the other half only partially), while anti-ferromagnetism occurs when neither half of the 3d states are completely filed. Gamma iron appears to be an example of a metal that can exist in both forms.
