SOLUBILIZATION AND RELATED FHENOMENA IN NONAQUEOUS TRIOLEIN/UNSATURATED LONG CHAIN FATTY ALCOHOL/METHANOL SOLUTIONS

Abstract
Five unsaturated C18 fatty alcohols were examined as solubility enhancers for methanol in nonaqueous triolein solution. Ternary equilibrium diagrams showed that addition of the unsaturated fatty alcohol can substantially affect miscibility in triolein-methanol mixtures. Under most experimental conditions, solubility, interracial tension, and kinematic viscosity results were consistent with those for co-solvency. That is, the fatty alcohols act as co-solvents for increasing methanol solubility in triolein. On the other hand, for 1:1 (vol) triolein/(Z)-9-octadecen-l-ol solutions with greater than 0.444 vol frac methanol, relative viscosity data were consistent with those for solutions containing large aggregates. Under these conditions, it is feasible that the fatty alcohols act as “true” solubilizers for increasing methanol solubility in triolein.
