Abstract
To the Editor: We present suggestive evidence of an adverse drug interaction between dextromethorphan and monoamine oxidase inhibitor therapy, which occurred in a 32-year-old woman with a history of chronic atypical depression.After taking 30 mg of isocarboxazid each morning for eight weeks, the patient acquired an upper respiratory tract infection with a persistent cough. At 9 p.m., she ingested 1 mg of diazepam and 10 ml of Robitussin DM, an over-the-counter cold remedy containing 15 mg of dextromethorphan hydrobromide and 100 mg of guaifenesin.
