Abstract
Birefringence in LPE films of pure and substituted Y3Fe5O12 for magneto‐optical waveguides was investigated by a guided‐wave technique at the wavelength of 1.152 μm. In addition to the stress‐induced birefringence Δnsf due to the lattice mismatch between film and substrate, we find another type of birefringence δn with negative sign of the order of 10−5 in (YNd)3Fe5O12 and (YSm)3Fe5O12 films. In the films containing Bi ions such as (YNdBi)3(FeGa)5O12 and (YbPrBi)3(FeGa)5O12, the signs of δn are positive and their magnitudes are of the order of 10−4. Correspondences of δn and the growth‐induced magnetic anisotropy are pointed out, which suggest that δn is growth‐induced birefringence. This publication has 9 references indexed in Scilit:
