Abstract
In 1996, 21.8% of the approximately 3.9 million deliveries in the United States were by cesarean delivery, 14.4% were assisted vaginal (forceps or vacuum extraction), and the remaining 63.8% were spontaneous vaginal.1 Previous research has shown that postpartum morbidities, such as anemia or wound complications, are more common and of longer duration among women who have had cesarean or assisted vaginal delivery than among those who have had spontaneous vaginal delivery.2-4 However, the relationship between delivery method and rehospitalization, an indicator of severe maternal morbidity, is largely unreported.
