ANAESTHESIA FOR LAMINECTOMY AND LOCALIZED CORD COOLING IN ACUTE CERVICAL SPINE INJURY: Report of Three Cases

Abstract
A new method of treating selected cases of acute spinal cord injury entails immediate laminectomy and localized cord cooling. The technique of cooling is described and the anaesthetic management of three cases with cervical trauma who underwent this procedure is discussed. As a result of this procedure, no significant changes in body temperature, circulation or respiration were observed during anaesthesia, and no deleterious effect on the neurological outcome occurred in these patients. A strong clinical impression of a beneficial effect was obtained in one case.
