Abstract
Casts of the gill vasculature of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) perfused with Microfil were examined visually. The most conspicuous feature seen was enlargements, called blebs, of the afferent filamental vessels that were located in the outermost region of the interfilamental septa. Several lamellae were supplied by profusely branched afferent lamellar vessels, whereas most lamellae were individually connected to the efferent filamental vessel. Vessels contained in the septal area and those that ran parallel to the long axis of the filaments are also described and possible functions of the blebs are discussed.
