Abstract
The impact of external quality monitoring on one Swedish university institution is reported. Using this university as a case, it is argued that the impact, so far, is indirect and must be seen in relation to other substantial changes which recently have affected the institutions. The improvement‐oriented approach to external monitoring launched by the National Agency has encouraged the institutions to increase their concern for their own strategic management as an important means for coping with new demands and expectations, and thus also for enhancing quality. Keywords
