Rating Salmonid Habitat Research Needs in the Central Rocky Mountains

Abstract
To evaluate salmonid habitat research needs in the central Rocky Mountain region, fisheries biologists, public land managers, and researchers were asked to rate 50 specific research needs and 7 general research categories in a mail survey. High ratings from the respondents across many research subjects suggested a need for expanded salmonid habitat research in the region. Further research on sediment had the highest mean rating of the seven general research categories. Specific research needs that rated highest included: (1) develop methods to quantify cumulative impacts; (2) develop and validate standard methods to inventory and monitor fishery habitats; (3) define determinants for critical winter habitat; (4) evaluate the effectiveness of habitat improvement techniques; and (5) quantify the economic and recreational values of fisheries.
