RENAL PAPILLARY NECROSIS

Abstract
This is a discussion of the occurrence of renal papillary necrosis in 14 reported cases from the Cleveland Clinic. The patients had diabetes, analgesic abuse, obstructive uropathy, and acute and chronic pyelonephritis as the various factors contributing to the diagnosis of this entity. Urinary tract infection seemed to be the dominant and most important finding, and it is emphasized that renal papillary necrosis probably represents a manifestation of pyelonephritis.
