Socioeconomic effects of ankylosing spondylitis

Abstract
Summary Subjects with ankylosing spondylitis are frequently required to make many adjustments to their lifestyle. As these occur over many years, accommodation to the disease is usually accomplished adequately. However, it is important that the physician is aware of the functional problems, of which the patient will rarely complain, and should be able to advise and summon help, particularly with regard to employment and sexual activity. The problems of women with the illness need further exploration. Résumé Les sujets souffrant de spondylite ankylosante doivent fréquemment introduire de nombreux ajustements à leur style de vie. Comme ceux-ci se produisent sur un certain nombre d'années, l'adaptation à la maladie se fait généralement d'une manière adéquate. Cependant, il est important que le médecin soit conscient des problèmes fonctionnels, dont le patient ne se plaindra que très rarement, et soit capable de conseiller et d'apporter une aide, en particulier en ce qui concerne l'emploi et les activités sexuelles. Les problèmes des femmes ay ant cette maladie nécessitent une étude supplémentaire. Zusammenfassung Patienten, die an ankylosierender Spondylitis leiden, müssen sich häufig in ihrem Lebensstil darauf einstellen. Da sich die Krankheit im Laufe vieler Jahre entwickelt, findet diese Einstellung gewöhnlich angemessen statt. Es ist jedoch wichtig, dass der behandelnde Arzt das funktionelle Problem kennt, über das sich der Patient selten beklagt. Er sollte in der Lage sein, ihn zu beraten und ihm Hilfe zu leisten, besonders im Hinblick auf seinen Arbeitsplatz und sein Sexualleben. Die Probleme von Frauen, die an dieser Krankheit leiden, sind noch genauer zu untersuchen.
