Abstract
The progressive metamorphism of Canaveilles series (Cambrian) pelitic sediments, in the Canigou massif of the eastern Pyrenees, was studied by the systematic analysis of the mineral associations and application of the phase rule. Eleven subfacies--muscovite-chlorite to sillimanite-microcline--are described and grouped into suites. The sillimanite-microcline subfacies occurs locally at the contact with anatectic granites, frequently masked by the development of potassium metasomatites resulting from the percolation of postmagmatic solutions through the country rock. Three types of metamorphism are recognized. The types are indicative of increasing pressure from west to east at the time of the Hercynian metamorphism.
