6. The cruise in 1968, general report

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The Norwegian marine biological investigations in the Bahamas, initiated in 1967 (Brattström 1968), were continued in 1968, in collaboration with the Lerner Marine Laboratory, Bimini, under contract ONR 552 (07) with the United States Office of Naval Research. The cruise started from Bimini on 5 March and ended there on 2 April. As in 1967 the R/V J. A. Oliver, Captain T. Sewell, was used. The research programme was in the main identical to that of the first cruise but covered another area. The intention was to study the southernmost part of the Bahamas. Weather conditions, however, made a slight change necessary (see Itinerary). Until the whole area has been covered the investigations to a certain extent are necessarily of a reconnaissance nature, but experience from 1967 made it possible to work in more detail in 1968 and to concentrate upon certain topics which the first cruise had shown to be profitable.
