Full-Thickness Eye Wall Resection in Primates

Abstract
A technique for full-thickness (sclera, choroid, and retina) resection of the posterior segment of the eye is described. The resected area (10 mm in diameter) was replaced with scleral homograft. Resections were performed on the eyes of baboons, rhesus monkeys, and owl monkeys. There was no instance of retinal detachment or inflammatory reaction to the graft. Moderate vitreous hemorrhage occurred in some animals, but the hemorrhage was completely resorbed in each case within six to eight weeks. We conclude that fullthickness resection of the posterior segment is feasible in the primate eye.
