Methyltrineopentyloxyphosphonium iodide is obtained as a stable, crystalline intermediate, by the interaction of trineopentyl phosphite and iodomethane at room temperature; in solution the intermediate decomposes by a first-order reaction to yield neopentyl iodide, without rearrangement. Keywords
