Abstract
SUMMARY: Excised internodal segments of Ailanthus altissima were grown aseptically on a defined nutrient medium which lacked added growth regulators. Vascular cambium, phloem or cortex, depending upon which of these tissues is exposed, undergoes tangential cell divisions and produces new tissue on top of the explant. Buds appear in surface layers of the newly formed tissue. Seasonal controls of this process are evident from the greater amount of regeneration in samples collected in spring (March‐May). Keywords
