Abstract
The results contained in this paper are based on the examination of numerous specimens of Atrypa from various parts of Europe and America and on the detailed study of many hundreds of British specimens. A type specimen for Atrypa reticularis (Linnaeus) has been selected from the five syntypes in the Linnaean collection. Atrypa reticularis s.s. does not seem to occur in the British Isles, where the species is represented by an evolutional series of six varieties, and two local varieties found only at Dudley. Each member of the main series becomes predominant in one of the six main subdivisions of the Silurian, though occurring also in other subdivisions. At Dudley, local varieties are developed at the Wenlock and “Aymestry” limestone horizons. Thus it is possible to use this extremely common brachiopod for rough zonal work in this country. In Poland and Sweden also Atrypa reticularis appears to develop forms of stratigraphical significance. The British forms of Atrypa are closely related to the Continental species, which, however, show a certain amount of local variation. American forms on the whole show a more vigorous and extravagant development than European forms. Keywords
