Plants Poisonous to Livestock. A Review

Abstract
A review of present information concerning plant poisonings of livestock as they occur in veterinary practice in the United States. Lists are given of plants shown to have caused stock loss by reason of their content of toxic principles of the following kinds: alkaloids, glycosides (glucosides) including cyanogenetic and saponic, irritant oils, organic acids, minerals including nitrates, selenium and molybdenum, resins or resinoids, phytotoxins, and toxic principles causing primary or hepatogenic photosensitivity. To these is added a list of plants whose action is mechanical or whose toxic principle is unique or as yet partially uncharacterized. Brief discussions of the chemical nature and physiological activity of the listed toxic principles are given as appropriate.
