Abstract
This paper constitutes a review of telocentric chromosomes. They can be classified according to their origin and stability. There is no evidence that a telocentric chromosome is unstable because its centromere is terminal. It is suggested therefore that telocentric chromosomes are rare not because their centromeres are inefficient but because they have a low chance of survival. Many of the cells in which they occur are likely to die because of genetical unbalance brought about by chromosome deficiencies or excesses. Since terminal centromeres are efficient there is no a priori reason why acrocentric chromosomes without a visible terminal structure are not in fact telocentric. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
