Symptomatological classification in the development of stroke in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Abstract
The developmental course of cerebrovascular disease was examined by comparative neurological and pathological studies in stroke-prone SHR [spontaneously hypertensive rats] (SHRSP) which died spontaneously or were sacrificed. Behavioral status during their life span was divided into 4 patterns: no abnormalities, irritable, lethargic and akinetic, named grades O, I, II and III, respectively (Yamori''s classification). Grades I, II and III corresponded well to 3 symptomato-pathoanatomically divided stages (relating to brain edema), i.e., Stages I, II and III, respectively. [The use of the SHRSP as a model for human stroke was discussed.].
