The Effect of a High Gamma Dose on a Human Foetus

Abstract
In 1953 a 38 yr-old woman, treated during pregnancy with 226Ra because of a cervix carcinoma, delivered a healthy baby. The foetal whole-body dose, assessed through an experimental reconstruction of the radiation field and the use of LiF dosimeters, is estimated to have been about 680 rad. A clinical investigation found no injury to the now 24 yr-old male adult, who already has a healthy son of his own.
