Abstract
This article explores the issue of informed consent prior to treatment and procedures for children under 16 years of age. Literature on the subject is reviewed and the author discusses the different attitudes to consent found among healthcare professionals. Recommendations on how to involve children in decision making are also made The UKCC Code of Professional Conduct (1992) states: ‘Each registered nurse, midwife and health visitor shall act at all times, in such a manner as to safeguard and promote the interests of individual patients and clients.’ However, the dilemma of involving children in consent to treatment may be more difficult, intrinsically, than in other areas. Keywords
