Regularities in Abnormal Child Phonology

Abstract
This paper reports conclusions from a study which attempted to determine the usefulness of applying generative notational conventions to a phonology of sound substitutions of abnormal children. The results suggest that the conventions make it possible to capture numerous generalizations which must be left unstated in more traditional frameworks. The results also suggest that there is much more regularity in abnormal speech than there would appear to be at first glance. The author argues that these regularities reflect remarkable abilities which abnormal children possess.
